Starches are natural polymers formed by a wide variety of cereal plants and tubers. The starch content once extracted can then be further processed into a variety of biopolymers with an incredible range of properties. From protective foams that can dissolve in a glass of water, to high tech films that are replacing plastic supermarket bags, these materials provide an incredible selection for us to design with. These materials provide us with smart alternatives to replace the most polluting disposable plastics on the planet.
Level 2 Industries is currently developing several bio-based starch foams for use in insulation and void fill applications. Vegetable starches play a central theme in the development of many of our products. All vegetable starches are bio-degradable and or dissolvable.
Starch also plays a key role in bio-polymer formulations. Starch modifications help us to change properties of our polymer formulas to better fit specific applications. Protein based vegetable materials can also be formulated to be fire retardant which is interesting for some applications. |
